This is an icon I have written for my nephew Alan and his wife, Yulia. They were married in August 2008 and I told them at the time I would write an icon for them as part of their wedding gift. Although I asked them what subject they would like, they asked me to make the selection. As icons of Jesus Christ and the Theotokus are frequently given as wedding gifts, I made the decision for an icon of The Holy Face, also known as the Mandylion, for the napkin on which the face of Christ miraculously appeared. As you can see this icon is on a different shaped board than the other similar icon on this blog. It has some other variations in the treatment of the background. The size is 11 x 14 on a gessoed board. The halo is 24 k. gold and the image is written in egg tempera.
